Panoramic hike across Vidden plateau

Vidden

Since 1961, the Ulriken cable car has transported passengers from the city to the high mountain. Today the ride takes 6 minutes. The hike starts at Mt. Ulriken (643 MASL), the highest of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. Then you traverse across the expansive plateau known as Vidden. The trail showcases breathtaking panoramic views of the city, surrounding fjords, and majestic mountains and offers varied terrain, from rocky outcrops to lush meadows adorned with vibrant wildflowers, providing a true immersion into Norway's pristine wilderness. Along the way, you may encounter curious gracing sheep and wildlife roaming freely in their natural habitat. The hike ends at Mt. Fløyen (320 MASL), one of Bergen's most iconic viewpoints. After a challenging yet rewarding journey, You can relax and enjoy a well-deserved break at one of the mountain cafes before descending back into Bergen via the Fløibanen funicular.

Itinerary

Your guide will meet you at your hotel and take you to the lower station of the Ulriken Cable car, by taxi.
You take the Cable car to the top.
At the top, you pick up your lunch at The Skyscraper restaurant and put it in your backpack. You may use the facilities; go to the bathroom, fill up your water bottle, etc.
You embark on the hike. Along the trail, we find a suitable spot to sit down and eat lunch.
The hike ends at Mt. Fløyen. You may sit down at a cafe/restaurant before returning to the city via the Fløybanen funicular.
Your guide walks you back to your hotel.

Practical information

Bring a small backpack for extra clothes, a water bottle, sunglasses, sun lotion, a phone, a camera, etc. You can fill up your water bottle at the cable car's upper station. We recommend using hiking shoes and dressing according to the weather. Mt Ulriken however is exposed to shifting weather. To be prepared for various conditions, dress in layers of clothes and cover with a windproof shell. Then you may easily adjust your temperature.

Disclaimer

Be aware that this hike is sensitive to bad weather. In case of fog or strong winds, your guide will take you on an alternative hike below the tree line.
